In an interview with IGN, Mark Hamill was taking about the differences in how J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson approached the character of Luke Skywalker when he dropped this tidbit about George Lucas: “I happen to know that George didn’t kill Luke until the end of [Episode] 9, after he trained Leia. Which is another thread that was never played upon [in The Last Jedi].” This is the first we are hearing that Lucas intended to kill Skywalker off at the end of Episode IX and that he was going to train Leia in the Force. Obviously, in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Luke Skywaker did meet his end and Leia seemed to have already been trained to use her Force powers. This is massive news just as the latest installment in the trilogy is about to come out on home video.
Mark Reilly and John Rocha sit down to react to this news and give their thoughts on what Lucas laid out and Hamill revealing it. There is obviously a lot to unpack here and Luke’s fate has certainly been a combustible topic to have a conversation about with the fandom right now.
