John discusses the news of Alex Kurtzman overseeing the new Star Trek universe.
A short while ago it was announced that the CBS All Access show Star Trek Discovery has dumped their showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg in favor of Alex Kurtzman for season 2. Kurtzman worked on all the recent Star Trek movies as either the writer or executive producer… and now it’s been announced that he will oversee the expansion of the Star Trek universe on TV. From Variety, sources say there are currently multiple shows set within the “Star Trek” universe already in development under Kurtzman.
The potential new shows are said to include: A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo currently serve as co-showrunners on the Hulu-Marvel series “Runaways”. A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story. Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh. He was famously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and again in the film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.” Benedict Cumberbatch then played the character in the 2013 film “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Also, an animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
